Volume 0.4 ENERGIZESomewhere over the rainbow's edge we've exaggerated our connectors in the hear and now and pulled this contact point together. We've browsed the white noise of the dataweb and scanned the clouds of ambient chaos for moments that we hope you find provocative. Our antennas, ever-more deviated from norms of media behavior, have found that mutual focus - new potentials of aural experience in everyday living. Like Zen-sitive gleamings on the water, some ideas here will resonate intuitively, some are slippery, and others threaten tradition. Our purpose is to not solicit agreement, but to create situations where meaningful reflection is the only escape and critical thinking the only alternative. In the spirit of Franz Kafka, we say "If what you're reading doesn't wake you up with a blow to the head, what are you reading it for?" ^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^INNERVIEW "As a child, I was inspired by instrumental music; it fueled my imagination and carried my mind to distant and magical places. In realizing this potential, I conceived the possibility for music to inspire spiritual journeys and to access the listener's inner spaces as well. The same magic that drew me into music as a child, draws me still more deeply now to create sublime atmospheres that are not bound by language, but liberated by infinite spirit". ~Giles Reaves, http://www.spaceformusic.com/gilesreaves.html^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^ If the universe is everything, and scientists say that the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into? ^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^ AFFAIRS > looming...

The reason for this has to do with a human's ability to locate sounds in space. This ability is described by the science of psychoacoustics, and specifically by the set of formulas called "Head Related Transfer Functions" (HRTF). Enter HeadRoom, the one-stop spot for all things headphone, who employ as little circuitry as possible in an attempt to fix the localization problem without mucking up the signal. MANIFESTO The Musical Hyperculture escorts us into a millennia fraught with jeopardy yet laden with freedom. Its most striking feature is its novelty, but there are a few precedents to steer us. In the 1920's, intimidated by the industrial Hypercommodity, the Bauhaus endeavored to deliver a generation of minds together - under a flat roof and behind a transparent curtain wall - with a faculty comprised of "masters of form" and "masters of technique." The aim was to produce a new-fashioned designer who had infused both sides of this chasm, and could thus transcend it. What we need today is an Earhaus, an Aural Bauhaus geared to the culture periled not by industrial overproduction but by postindustrial Hypermusic. Masters of Art must come together with Masters of Science to produce a new generation of ear people equal to the tasks of the 21st century - not just audio stylists or sonic mercenaries, but aurally literate missioners poised to transform the virulent wasteland of the present into a sustainable ecology of acoustic design. It is difficult to hear what the process of the Earhaus will sound like, to conceptualize the musical equivalent of tubular steel furniture and sans-serif typefaces of the '20's. But that is no apology for continuing business as usual. We are adrift in a sea of bad data and the waves are rising. We must send out as many rafts as possible in hopes that some of them will reach the shore. ^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^G-EAR - Pack it up and go @ http://www.boblbee.com ^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^ TOOLS Loopers Delight is a cultural and informational resource for musicians creating with audio loops of every sort. Psychomusicology, as a subdomain of the academic discipline of Systematic Musicology, can assist the working musician to a better understanding of his own processes, because it is the science which deals with the very processes which every musician must use, and which alone gives rise to the art of music itself. It is both suprising and unfortunate that a subject so obviously and fruitfully related to the interests of all musical people should be so little known today. The Psychomusicologist is something of a maverick among music practitioners. While Musicology is a widespread occurrence, Psychomusicology remains eminently individualistic, idiosyncratic and enigmatic, standing ever apart from organized scientific investigations while performing important functions for the psychic life of the aural culture. The stuff of the psychomusical world is subjective. It cannot be measured by an instrument. Efforts may be under way to do so, but their outcome will not alter the value of the experience. Comparable, but not identical to sonic shamanism, Psychomusicologists utilize techniques of unique efficacy that elude modern psychology. What is the role of the Psychomusicologist in society at large? The vocation of Psychomusicology is still a new concept. He/She is a manipulator of sonic information, which means they have all the vibrating elements of life as their palette, their main function is to induce musical ecstasy in a society where ecstasy is the prime motivation for existence. Thus the Psychomusicologist is a master of musical ecstasy and the practice of Psychomusicologizing is a technique of this ecstasy. A person may become a Psychomusicologist through an initiatory experience. The initiation has two aspects, an ecstatic one which takes place in the musical experience, and a traditional one in which the Psychomusicologist gains instruction in certain techniques such as the significance of sound, the expressive musical language, an understanding of the underlying principles which animate life, a cornucopia of linguistic apparatus, the practice of metatation, and so on, by an experienced Psychomusicologist. Lack of public retrial on this instruction no way implies that it is neglected. ^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^VIDEOSYNCRASY In Future Sound of London's highly conceptual and creative video 'My Kingdom' (Astralwerks), alien lifeforms arrive and integrate themselves into everyday life. The design, lighting, and "feel" of your room creates a powerful metaphoric environs in which to contemplate the unfolding magic of music. Each part works perfectly so that that every element in your awareness is completely lent to your experience. If you've been designing the conditions, both inside and out, to make a music haven, you'll know why the impulse to amplify new music moods at home is a pure expression of your desire to amplify life.
